It’s exciting to see that more women have been breaking the barriers and entering the trades field. Women in construction has grown and now women in welding is a choice that is an up and coming career choice for women.
Starting back in 2019, The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities funded a pre-apprenticeship welding program for women. At the Cambrian College in Sudbury, the Women in Welding program is only on of the examples of Ontario government’s recent incentives to have women and Indigenous students, join the trades.
In this program, students received the first portion of a welding apprenticeship, Health and Safety Association training, and an eight-week co-op with an employer including career development workshops.
“This program is helping to break down barriers women face in pursuing careers in welding, and it’s showing women welders are every bit as skilled as their male counterparts,” says Kimberly Glibbery, Manager of Apprenticeships & Partnerships at Cambrian College.
