Stay safe this winter

As winter sets in across Ontario, it’s time to prepare for the unique safety challenges that come with the cold season. Snow, ice, and low temperatures can increase the risk of slips, trips, falls, and cold-related illnesses both at work and on the road.

One of the most common winter hazards is icy or snow-covered walkways. Ensure all entrances, parking lots, and outdoor paths are regularly cleared and salted to reduce slip-and-fall risks. Encourage employees to wear proper winter footwear with good traction and to take their time when walking on potentially slippery surfaces. Inside, use moisture-absorbing mats and keep floors dry to prevent accidents.

Cold stress is another serious concern. Workers exposed to freezing temperatures for extended periods can suffer from hypothermia or frostbite. Provide warm break areas, encourage layering of insulated clothing, and schedule regular breaks in heated spaces. Supervisors should monitor for signs of cold-related illness—such as shivering, confusion, or pale skin—and ensure quick access to first aid if needed.

For those who drive as part of their work, winter road safety is critical. Remind employees to perform vehicle inspections before every trip. Keep emergency kits in all vehicles, including blankets, flashlights, and non-perishable snacks. When weather conditions are severe, consider delaying non-essential travel until roads are cleared.

Finally, communication and training are key. Review your company’s winter safety policies and make sure employees know how to report hazards, incidents, or unsafe conditions. By staying proactive, you can minimize risks and ensure everyone returns home safely each day.
