This time of year it’s really important to learn how to prevent hypothermia.

Hypothermia is a condition that occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. When this happens it’s considered a medical emergency. Normal body temperature is around 98.6 F (37 C). Hypothermia starts to occur when your body temperature falls below 95 F (35 C).

Know the signs of Hypothermia:

The first thing you’ll notice is when someone starts to shiver.

  • Shivering
  • Slurred speech or mumbling
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Weak pulse
  • Clumsiness or lack of coordination
  • Drowsiness or very low energy
  • Confusion or memory loss
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Bright red, cold skin (in infants)

When to see a doctor.

Call 911  if you think someone has hypothermia.

While you wait for help to arrive,  help the person move inside if possible. Jarring movements can trigger dangerous irregular heartbeats. Carefully remove his or her wet clothing, replacing it with warm, dry coats or blankets.

How you can prevent Hypothermia by using the COLD method. COLD stands for Cover, Overexertion, Layers, Dry:

  • Cover. We lose a lot of hear from our bodies from the top of our heads. Make sure you are wearing a really warm winter hat. Don’t forget that gloves are also important to have on.
  • Overexertion. Avoid outside work that would causes you to sweat a lot. Having on wet clothing and then add the cold weather can cause you to lose body heat more rapidly.
  • Layers. Wear loose fitting, layered, lightweight clothing.  Your work coat should be made of a really tight women fabric, water repellent and wind resistant.
  • Dry. Stay as dry as you possible can. Get out of wet clothing as soon as possible. Having extra clothing may be a good idea to change into if you find your clothes are damp from sweating.

This is also a good time to look at your businesses practices for safety and outdoor work. It’s also a good time to make sure your business is up on First Aid Certification. Take a look at some of them we offer. Auspice Health And Safety Courses.
