We can all use a little mood pick-me-up every now and again. The reality of mental health is that it’s a lot like physical fitness: you have to put in regular effort to get positive results out.

Here are some of the best tips recommended by our friends at the Canadian Mental Health Association to help maintain your mental wellbeing.

1. Build confidence in yourself.
It’s too easy to get lost in negative emotions some times. We all do it. But try to rise above those feelings by reminding yourself every now and again of the things you’re really good at and which you enjoy doing.

2. Build your support network.
Sometimes, we take positivity from knowing we’re surrounded by good people. Humans are social animals that depend on others for emotional support. Check in with the people most important to you regularly—whether it’s to connect, have fun, or talk about serious issues.

3. Volunteer.
Giving back to a community group is a great way to feel good about yourself. Even small contributions can make big differences. Volunteering is also a great way to meet people who share the same interests as you.

4. Build your own emotional toolkit.
Sometimes knowing what makes you happy or sad or angry is the first step to coping with emotional highs and lows. Learn what triggers your strong emotions—and what helps you manage these feelings. Some people use music, others like physical exercise. Everyone copes differently.

5. Take time to yourself.
Spending time with yourself is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your emotional wellbeing. Take the time to be comfortable with yourself and to do the things you love on your own. It’s a real confidence booster.
